Press photos show us the world and its many facets -- sometimes exotic, often unusual. Through their snapshots, press photographers provide a powerful and truthful record of key events in the previous year. Château de Prangins - Swiss National Museum invites visitors to take a unique journey through 2019 with two exhibitions - Swiss Press Photo and World Press Photo - that open on 20 November.
2019 was marked by a wave of protests around the world, demanding protection for freedoms and citizens' rights or calling on governments to act on climate change. The winners of Swiss Press Photo and World Press Photo all used their creativity and skill to capture one or more images of these current events. From 20 November, Château de Prangins will be presenting these high-quality photographs in their various categories (news, sports, daily life, nature, portraits, Swiss stories, etc.), with public guided tours every Sunday.
Yves Leresche, Swiss Press Photographer of the Year 2020, took the winning photo in the News category: an image of young women in Lausanne during the women's strike on 14 June 2019. This was a significant day in recent Swiss history, as hundreds of thousands of women left their places of work to go out onto the streets and demonstrate for equality and against sexism and sexual violence.
On the global level, the World Press Photo of the Year was taken by Yasuyoshi Chiba. Illuminated by mobile phones, a young Sudanese man recites protest poetry during a blackout in Khartoum on 19 June. The Sudanese authorities attempted to crack down on the many demonstrations that had been taking place since December 2018 by imposing blackouts, but were finally forced to yield to pressure from the streets and sign a power-sharing agreement on 17 August 2020.
